Tony de Gouveia – A Career Spanning 40 Years in Psychology & Coaching
I have been a practising clinical psychologist for over 40 years, working across clinical settings, academia, and executive coaching.
My career has included roles in higher education, corporate consulting, and psychological services, always with a focus on mental well-being, resilience, and leadership development.
I currently practice from Akeso and Life Brackenview Clinics in Alberton, offering psychological support, executive coaching, and resilience training to individuals and professionals.

Academic Experience & Executive Coaching
For nearly 20 years, I lectured in General and Industrial Psychology at Vista University (now UJ Soweto Campus), providing students with essential psychological and behavioural insights. My teaching expanded into business education, where I contributed to leadership psychology and organisational behaviour courses at:
-
Graduate School of Management and Technology(GIMT)
-
Milpark Business School(Management Training and MBA program
-
Wits Business School
This academic foundation naturally led to my work in executive coaching and organisational behaviour consulting, where I help professionals strengthen leadership skills, enhance resilience, and navigate workplace dynamics.
My expertise in these areas also led me to co-found the South African Portuguese Chamber of Commerce (SAPCC), where I serve as an executive director, focusing on business strategy and leadership development.
Since 2013, I have led the Positive Psychology Group (PPG) Johannesburg, a professional development forum for individuals and corporates seeking personal growth and development.

As one of the few Portuguese-speaking psychologists and executive coaches in South Africa, I offer culturally sensitive psychological services to clients from Mozambique, Angola, and Portugal. My understanding of both the language and cultural dynamics allows me to provide tailored support to individuals, corporate teams, and organisations seeking therapy, resilience training, and leadership coaching.
Client Engagements have included:
-
M-Net (Canal Português) – Focus group research
-
Deloitte & Touche – Assessment centre evaluations
-
Mozal (BHP Billiton Mozambique) – Supervisory management training
-
Standard Bank (Angola) – Leadership coaching
-
LAM (Mozambique Airlines) – Employee resilience coaching
-
Angolan Embassy in South Africa – Psychological counselling and executive coaching
By providing therapy and coaching in Portuguese, I ensure that language and cultural differences are never a barrier to accessing professional support.
